Read the verbs: play, summon, draw, and destroy

Small words can change what a card does. Check the event, target, and place a card needs before you act.

Two plays may leave a similar board but cause different effects. Start by naming what you need: a Battlecry, a draw, a death, or something else.

WordsWhat changes
Play / SummonPlaying uses a card from hand. Summoning puts a minion on the board. A minion summoned by an effect normally does not use its Battlecry.
Draw / Add to handDrawing moves a card from your deck to hand. A full hand can burn it. Making or returning a card can add it without counting as a draw.
Damage / DestroyDamage lowers Health. It can be blocked or healed. Destroy removes a minion even at high Health, unless a rule protects it.
Silence / TransformSilence removes text and most added effects but keeps the same minion. Transform replaces it. This usually skips the old Deathrattle and changes what can be brought back.
Temporary / PermanentA temporary effect ends when stated, often at turn end. A lasting effect stays until the card leaves play, is silenced, or a rule removes it.
Aura / EnchantmentAn aura keeps checking its source and rules. An enchantment is an effect added to a card. It may stay after the source is gone.
Attack / DamageAttack is a stat and also the act of fighting. Damage can come from attacks or other effects. More Attack alone does not deal damage.
Discover / RandomDiscover gives you a small choice. A random effect chooses for you. Both may have limits on class, type, cost, school, set, or other rules.

Check the steps

If you need a Battlecry, make sure you play the minion. A summon alone does not count. If you need to stop a Deathrattle, check how Silence or Transform works in that case.

A tutor may draw a chosen kind of card. It can still count as a draw even if it does not take the top card.

Check targets too. “All,” “random,” and “adjacent” effects work differently from clicking a target. Protection from being targeted does not block every area effect. A chosen target must be legal when you select it.

Returning, copying, and summoning can change which buffs, damage, or past events a card keeps. A copy does not always mean exactly what you see now. If an unfamiliar rule decides the win, check it instead of guessing.
