Welcome to Learn Hearthstone

A practical library for learning Hearthstone, one decision at a time.

What’s Hearthstone?

Hearthstone is Blizzard’s digital collectible card game (CCG), set in the Warcraft universe. It belongs to the same family of games as Magic: The Gathering, Pokémon, and Yu-Gi-Oh!, with its own rules and personality—all in video game format.

A CCG is a game in which you collect cards with different abilities and choose cards from your collection to build a deck. Your collection is the pool of cards available to you; your deck is the selection you bring into a match. Unlike a game played with a fixed pack of ordinary playing cards, each player can bring a different deck and a different plan.

What makes a CCG distinctive?

Collecting & customization
Growing your collection gives you more options. Building your own deck lets you express a preferred play style, from fast attacks to patient defense.
Cards that work together
A card’s strength depends on what surrounds it. Combining abilities can make a deck more effective than a pile of individually powerful cards.
Strategy & resource choices
You decide what to play, when to attack, and what to save. Limited resources mean you cannot do everything at once; good play balances immediate needs with future turns.
Skill & uncertainty
Shuffled decks make the order of your draws unpredictable, and you usually cannot see your opponent’s hand. Planning around possible outcomes matters, even though no decision guarantees a win.
Variety & discovery
Different opponents, decks, and card combinations create different challenges. New card sets introduce more possibilities and encourage players to experiment and adapt.

How Hearthstone brings it to the screen: In its main deck-based modes, two players take turns playing digital cards, summoning minions, and casting spells to defeat the opposing hero. The game handles shuffling, rules, and card effects automatically. You collect digital cards rather than physical ones, and cards cannot be traded between players.
