Slang

Informal expressions, nicknames, jokes and reactions you will hear in Hearthstone conversations.

Glossary and slang

The Glossary combines official game vocabulary with strategy and technical jargon, such as tempo, tutor, card advantage and “play to your outs.” Slang has its own section for informal expressions, jokes and reactions, such as “never lucky,” SMOrc and “yoink.”

Both lists are alphabetical. Each Glossary definition includes a short example. The blue category badges at the bottom of each Glossary entry explain how the term is used. Each category has its own box.

38 of 38 terms

Always Huffer

A joke about wanting Animal Companion to give you Huffer. Huffer can attack the enemy hero right away, which may win the game.

Backbreaking

A play that puts the other player so far behind that catching up is very hard.

BM (bad manners)

Short for bad manners. Players may use it for too many emotes, needless delays, or showing off before ending the game.

Body

A player term for a minion on the board. It often means the minion's Attack and Health, apart from its card text.

Brick

A card that is not useful right now. A hand with several such cards is called bricked.

Curvestone

A nickname for games or decks built around playing a strong card that fits each turn's mana.

Dies to removal

A common way to say a minion can be removed. This matters more if the answer is cheap, often used, and leaves the other player ahead.

Dry

Having no useful cards, targets, or plays left.

Exodia

A group of cards that gives a sure or nearly sure win once all the pieces are ready.

Face is the place

A saying about hitting the enemy hero. Do this when your damage can win the race and you can survive the other player's reply.

Farm

Beating a certain deck, class, or group of players often because your deck or play has an edge.

GG (good game)

Short for good game. Players often say it after a match to be polite. The timing and tone can also make it sound like a joke or insult.

Good stats for the cost

A minion has strong Attack and Health for its mana cost. Players use this both as real praise and as an old joke.

Greed / greedy

Choose more power for later at the cost of safety or strong early turns. Players call this a greedy deck or play.

Highroll / lowroll

A highroll is a very good random result or set of draws. A lowroll is a very bad one.

Jam

Playing a card or starting games right away, often without choosing a slow or tricky plan.

Jank

A strange or uneven deck built around unusual card effects. Players often make these decks for fun or to try new ideas.

Just go face

Advice to stop making too many minion trades and start damaging the enemy hero when that is your best way to win.

Never lucky

A joking complaint about bad luck. It may ignore the choices that affected your chances earlier in the game.

Non-game

A game that feels as if you had few useful choices. A very strong opening, bad deck pairing, or huge early play may cause this feeling.

Nuts / nut draw

The best, or nearly best, starting hand or run of draws for a deck.

OP (overpowered)

Short for overpowered: a claim that a card, deck, or combo is too strong. It is an opinion, not proof of a rank or win rate.

RNGesus / RNG gods

A joke that treats game luck like a person or god. RNGesus mixes RNG with Jesus and is also spelled RNGsus. It is an expression, not a game rule.

Usage examples

  • “RNGesus giveth, RNGesus taketh away” — A joke about lucky and unlucky random results following each other. For example, you draw the card you need, then a random effect goes against you. Players also use it when bad luck is followed by good luck.
  • “May RNGesus be with you” — A friendly way to wish someone good luck before a random effect, draw, game, or pack opening.

Salt / salty

Feeling upset after a loss, bad luck, or a deck you dislike facing. Calling someone salty can make it sound as if their feelings do not matter.

Scam

Winning through a huge, lucky, or much-earlier-than-usual play.

Slowroll

Wait before showing a clear winning play or strong answer. Other players may see this as bad manners.

SMOrc

A player joke that means attack the enemy hero and focus on damage instead of minion trades.

Solitaire

An insult for a deck that seems to focus only on its own combo and barely fights over the board.

The face plays Taunt

A joke that the enemy hero must be your main target because you can win by hitting it. It does not really give that hero Taunt.

The nut draw

An almost perfect opening or set of draws for your deck and the opponent you face.

Tilt

Letting anger or stress lead to worse choices after bad luck, mistakes, or losses.

Voltron

A player term for putting many buffs or added parts onto one main minion.

Vomit hand

Playing most of your hand quickly to fill the board or get far ahead right away.

Why is it always…?

A joking complaint about seeing the same card, deck, or random result over and over. The feeling alone does not prove the odds are wrong.

Wombo combo

Several cards making a big, exciting play together. It does not always mean the play wins that turn.

Yogg / casino

A player term for a card or play with lots of big random effects. It is not a game rule or card type.

Yoink

Taking, stealing, or copying an enemy card or resource. Check the effect to see which one happened.

You can’t heal dead

Advice to use healing and other defenses before the enemy can kill you. Save enough mana and cards to survive their likely burst of damage.
