Play to your outs

Pick the play that leaves a real chance to win. When far behind, that may mean hoping for a rare draw instead of choosing a safer loss.

Example: You set up enough damage that drawing your last damage spell next turn could win, even though a safer play cannot.

In conversation

“Play to the damage spell off the top” means choose a play that lets that next draw win. A safer-looking play may still lose even if you draw it.
