Build card groups that work together
Build card groups with clear setup, engines, and payoffs. Test different draw orders and keep a useful fallback when the full synergy is missing.
Find the link between the cards
Synergy means cards help one another. A small linked group is a package. Its value comes from the work the cards do together.
Suppose an imaginary deck makes small minions. A second card rewards you for having several minions. The makers provide the setup. The reward card is the payoff. The token / flood guide shows how small minions and board-wide buffs support this kind of plan.
Write the link in plain words: “This card supplies what that card needs.” Read both cards closely. Similar art or a shared name does not prove that their effects work together.
Check the setup cost
A powerful result may need time, mana, board space, or several cards. List each need. Include what you must give up while getting ready.
A payoff that needs a wide board may sit in your hand after a board clear. Ask whether the setup cards can make another board. Also ask whether the payoff helps when you are behind.
Test different draw orders
Picture three cases:
- You get setup before the payoff.
- You get the payoff before setup.
- You get only part of the group.
Describe what each card can do alone. A card may still earn its place even if it is weak alone, but its whole group must help your main plan often enough to justify the space.
Check the engine
An engine keeps giving you resources. It might supply more cards or help you build repeated threats. Ask what starts it, what keeps it running, and how the other player can stop it.
Keep enough support for the engine to do its job. If you cut a setup card, check the payoff and any search effects again. One swap can change a whole package.
Keep a useful fallback
Your deck will not always draw the best order. Plan a basic play for those games. Useful threats or answers can buy time without needing the full group.
Watch for win-more cards. A card that makes a winning board larger may help less than one that helps create or rebuild that board.
